What to check before you choose

The monthly price is only part of it. These are the questions that decide what a booking system really costs you.

  • Who owns the guest list?

Can you export every guest, with their marketing consent, whenever you like? Is consent given to your restaurant or to an app?

  • What do you sign?

Look for the contract length and the notice period. Annual terms that renew automatically can lock you in for another year.

  • What costs extra?

Deposits, events, email marketing, SMS and till integrations are often add-ons or carry a fee on every payment.

  • Who pays for marketplace diners?

Some systems charge per cover or a share of the bill for guests who found you through their app.

  • What happens in a quiet month?

A flat subscription costs the same in January as in December. A per-cover price follows your covers.

  • Could it close?

Quandoo and, in the UK, Resy have both shut. Owning your guest list means a closure doesn't take your regulars with it.

Comparing booking systems: questions answered

How much does a restaurant booking system cost?

Anything from a free plan for very small restaurants to several hundred a month. Subscription systems charge a monthly fee, often set by how many bookings you take, and marketplaces add a fee per cover from their network. Make a Rezzy charges $1.25 per seated cover, capped at $125 a month, with no subscription.

Is OpenTable free for restaurants?

No. OpenTable charges a monthly plan, from $149 on Basic to $499 on Pro, plus $1.00 to $1.50 for each seated cover booked through its network.

Which booking systems have no contract?

Make a Rezzy has no contract. Tablein and resOS also advertise no minimum term. ResDiary, SevenRooms and Access Collins publish terms that renew automatically unless you give 90 days' notice, and OpenTable is reported to use a 12-month plan that renews automatically.

How do I know I'll own my guest data?

Look for a system that keeps guests against your business, lets you export the full list with marketing consent at any time, and records consent to email from your restaurant rather than from a marketplace app. Make a Rezzy does all three.

Is Resy available in the UK?

No. Resy stopped serving UK restaurants in August 2024.
